Guest Support Services Representative – Custodial (Term Assignment)

Job summary

The Guest Support Services (GSS) Representative plays an integral role in supporting the institutional goal of providing superlative on-site visitor experiences that create powerful emotional connections with our diverse guests. The GSS Representative is responsible for keeping the Aquarium in a clean and safe condition. They work closely with other teams in a highly dynamic environment supporting both daytime operations and evening events. The GSS Representative serves in a variety of roles throughout both the main Aquarium and outbuildings supporting both staff and guests.  Perform other duties as required.

Core Responsibilities

  • Floor maintenance, carpet shampooing, vacuuming, mopping, and gum removal
  • Maintaining and re-suppling restrooms
  • Dusting, polishing hand railings, counter tops and woodwork
  • Setting up rooms and meeting spaces, moving furniture and moving and transporting boxes in and outside of main facility
  • Cleaning and maintaining glass and acrylic windows, other viewing surfaces
  • Emptying trash and recycle bins
  • Cleaning and prep work for night events
  • Proactively greet guests and engage them in conversation
  • Cleaning and maintaining office spaces
  • Clearly communicate necessary information to assist guests with visit planning, answer questions, and promote aquarium programs/membership
  • Maintain an ongoing knowledge of the Aquarium’s exhibits and programs, as well as common information related to the Monterey area
  • Engage guests throughout the Aquarium via various Guest
  • Experience Operations activities
  • Support guests, volunteers and other staff with safe and efficient exit, check-in and re-entry procedures during an Emergency Evacuation
  • Support other Operations Department workgroups, as well as other
  • Guest Experience Departments

Absolutely Required Skills/Knowledge/Ability/Experience or Education

  • Available to work both weekdays and weekends, as well as holidays
  • Demonstrate support for the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s mission
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills
  • Experience working both independently and as a member of a team
  • Ability to sustain enthusiastic interactions with both guests and staff throughout each work shift
  • Experience working with diverse audiences

Desired Skills/Knowledge/Ability/Experience or Education

  • Experience in using custodial supplies and equipment or hospitality
  • Ability to work indoors and out for the full duration of the scheduled shift
  • Ability/comfort proactively approaching guests
  • Ability to converse in another international language (Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, French, German, Portuguese, etc)
  • Experience in hospitality, housekeeping, customer service and/or attractions industry
  • Comfort with learning/using new technology

Ancillary Responsibilities

  • Operate Scissors lift / High Reach lift – Requires a valid license
  • California driver’s license and maintain clearance in the DMV Pull Program
  • Pressure washer training
  • Window Cleaning
