Monterey County is recognized as the “Salad Bowl of the World.” Its temperate climate, rich soils, and unparalleled infrastructure support system make this the ideal growing area for cool season vegetables, wine grapes, strawberries, and flowers. The County is also the home of the packaged salad and pre-cut fresh vegetables, representing 90% market share of the fresh vegetable value added industry. Because the agriculture here is year-round and highly labor intensive, Monterey County has the State’s highest agricultural payroll.

The Hospitality/Tourism sector includes a wide range of establishments that operate facilities or provide services to meet varied cultural, entertainment, and recreational interests of their patrons. This sector comprises (1) establishments that are involved in producing, promoting, or participating in live performances, events, or exhibits intended for public viewing; (2) establishments that preserve and exhibit objects and sites of historical, cultural, or educational interest; and (3) establishments that operate facilities or provide services that enable patrons to participate in recreational activities or pursue amusement, hobby, and leisure-time interests.

The Health Care and Social Assistance sector comprises establishments providing health care and social assistance for individuals. The sector includes both health care and social assistance because it is sometimes difficult to distinguish between the boundaries of these two activities. The industries in this sector are arranged on a continuum starting with those establishments providing medical care exclusively, continuing with those providing health care and social assistance, and finally finishing with those providing only social assistance.

There are 5,453 Health Care and Social Assistance establishments in Monterey County, an increase from 975 establishments ten years earlier in 2011. Over the ten years ending 2021, employment in Health Care and Social Assistance for Monterey County added 6,055 jobs.

Establishments in these industries use transportation equipment or transportation related facilities as a productive asset. The type of equipment depends on the mode of transportation. The modes of transportation are air, rail, water, road, and pipeline.

FIRE – Finance, Insurance, Real Estate

Financial operation of the economy through real estate, banking, and insurance. Finance, Insurance, and Real Estate (FIRE) includes banks, credit unions, mortgage loan originators, insurance companies, rental centers, and real estate offices
 
The FIRE sector is closely tied to all sectors as it supports the financial transactions of economic activity in the region. As such, FIRE activity will tend to follow the business cycle as spending on big-ticket items, like houses and automobiles, tend to increase during strong economic times, and decrease during recessionary periods.
 
FIRE in Monterey County employs 4,706. In 2021, there were 808 FIRE establishments in Monterey County; an increase from 729 establishments ten years earlier in 2011.
