The Computing Talent Initiative (CTI), an institute in CSUMB’s College of Science, is committed to its vision of ensuring that every California college student who is interested in studying computer science has access to a clear pathway that will lead them from where they are to a career in the tech industry.

CTI does this by building and implementing materials, pathways, and supports that prepare computer science students, particularly students from low-income, first-generation, URM backgrounds, to be competitive for opportunities in the technology workforce. A significant part of CTI’s strategy is to work with tech companies, nonprofits, and other institutions of higher education to meet the grant objectives.

CTI is a small team (~5 people) who are laser focused on achieving the grant goals, mission and vision. This makes for a dynamic, no-two-days-are-the-same type environment, which does require members of the team to be flexible and comfortable taking on a broad range of tasks.

As a team, CTI has identified these guiding principles that drive the operation:

Examples of Duties


The CTI Program Coordinator will work closely with the CTI Director and the rest of the team to ensure CTI is moving toward achieving our mission. The CTI Program Coordinator will have input into project goals and the metrics being used to measure success. Under the guidance of the CTI Director and/or Associate Director, the Program Coordinator will develop implementation plans related to specific outcomes of the project and work collaboratively with the rest of the team to execute those plans. The Program Coordinator will be expected to regularly reflect on and analyze results to identify key lessons that will inform future iterations of the same/similar project objectives.

The Program Coordinator responsibilities will fall into these two categories:

• Community Outreach & Recruitment: plan, organize and coordinate projects to increase awareness of CTI services to target audience (students, industry partners), update website, active engagement on social media (LinkedIn), recruitment of students (email marketing, tracking responses and follow through).

• Coordination of Administrative Processes: streamline internal & external administrative processes, and interface with various university corporation offices related to complete hiring, payroll, purchasing, contracts, etc.

The position is designated as hybrid, with the expectation that the Program Coordinator will be on campus at least 10-20% of the time to complete tasks that can only be done effectively in-person, i.e. building productive relationships with staff and students in-person, etc. The frequency and duration of the campus visit schedule can be designed in consultation with the CTI director.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include. but are not limited to. the following:

• Works with the director and team to establish project goals, define metrics for success, develop implementation plans, and execute plans to meet the project goals.

• On a regular basis analyzes the work and results of project efforts to identify key lessons to inform future iterations of same/similar project objectives.

• Assists in data collection efforts, evaluation of the entire initiative, and the generating of project reports.

• Coordinates virtual and in-person student events, training workshops, internships, mentorships, and other related functions; tracks participation; sends reminders and follow-ups.

• Prepares and processes operational documents related to planning, budgeting, purchasing, personnel, payroll, contracts, and other administrative activities, including timekeeping records.

• Effectively utilizes computer software to create, edit, compile, and translate data into reports.

• Participates in the design and writing of bulletins, brochures, news releases, and other materials to publicize or provide information about CTI.

• Monitors and verifies the accuracy of budget expenditures and timekeeping records.

• Assists in the selection, orientation, and training of program staff.

• Maintains program participant files and records.

• Provides training and work direction to student employees.

• Performs related duties as assigned.


• Perform other duties as assigned.

• Attend workshops and conferences as needed.

• Travel between CTI partners institution sites as needed.

• Ability to work with diverse and multicultural populations and to guide students of diverse backgrounds to higher levels of skill development.

• Ability to manage complex projects, work independently as well as collaboratively, and complete tasks on time. Excellent interpersonal, communication (written and verbal), and organizational skills.

• Ability to gather and analyze data; ability to reason logically, draw valid conclusions and make appropriate recommendations; ability to participate in and contribute to group meetings, conferences, and interviews; ability to present clear and concise information orally and in written reports.

• Ability to think creatively and conceptually and to apply independent judgment, discretion, and initiative to address problems and develop practical, thorough, and creative solutions.

• Ability to maintain effective working relationships with administration, faculty, student, and community partners.

• Strong personal computer skills including Word Processing, PowerPoint, Excel, Photoshop, database management.

• Knowledge of web development and experience with website maintenance is a plus.

• Experience with grant writing and reporting skills is a plus.

• Experience in developing marketing and publication materials is a plus.

Education and Experience

Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree. At least one year of work experience in program planning, implementation, and coordinating innovative programs is preferred. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

The monthly hiring range for this position is $5,374-$6,000. Classification: Grade 5, Staff. This is an exempt position and as such is not eligible for the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
