POSITION SUMMARY

Under the general direction of the Associate Director of Operations and Outreach, the Communication and Digital Media Specialist (CDMS) is responsible for communication functions for Student Housing and Residential Life and the student housing program. They include, but are not limited to, email content creation and distribution and website and content management. This role assists with conception and deployment of large-scale departmental campaigns to recruit applicants for on-campus housing, housing renewal, and assistance with telling the department’s story through innovative communication. It works closely with the Associate Director for Operations and Outreach, as well as other Student Housing and Residential Life (SHRL) staff, to actively promote the on-campus living experience. It provides assistance with communication and outreach efforts for current and future residents. The CCO will display an active commitment to engaging students, parents/supporters, and university partners via numerous mediums as well as developing procedural best practices and sharing the SHRL story. Additionally, the incumbent should have a working understanding of research and data analytics in order to support related decisions. The incumbent will need to have a highly collaborative attitude and strong communication skills, exercise critical thinking, and be an innovator in their areas of responsibility. Some evenings and weekend work will be required.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include. but are not limited to. the following

• This position will lead mass communication and digital media efforts for SHRL with special attention to emerging trends that effectively engage our target audiences.

• Oversee the curation of customer-focused, meaningful, and engaging content for various target audiences such as students, faculty, staff, and parents/supporters.

• Write, edit, and disseminate department communications, including but not limited to, emails and newsletters, to various audiences: students, parents/supports, faculty/staff, etc.

• Develop, write and/or edit a variety of written material (printed or digital) ensuring that all information accurately reflects the direction, emphasis and goals of SHRL, including translating materials for Spanish-speaking audiences.

• Update communication methods, templates, and tools as needed to ensure coherence to CSUMB brand identity guidelines, as well as student housing goals.

• Assists with the design and development of materials and publications for presentations and panels.

• Identify the needs and interests of various target groups (prospective students, supporters/parents, faculty, staff, current on-campus residents, off-campus students) and prepare information and materials accordingly.

• Assist with campus communication efforts, such as Admissions new student applicant mailings, to support housing recruitment and retention goals.

• Develop, maintain, and implement the SHRL communication schedule, which factors events and processes such as housing selection, move-in, checkout, etc.

• Serve as the department web content manager.

• Assist with creation of videos and graphics to be utilized for various SHRL efforts.

• Assist with social media curation as needed.

• Develop and maintain a list of off-campus housing options for students on the SHRL website.

• Assist with providing resident statistical data.

• Ensure that projects stay within the budget guidelines of the department.

• Support Enrollment Management and Student Affairs outreach and communications efforts as needed.

• Collaborate as needed with University Communications to support institutional brand and communication standards, processes, and goals.

• Performs other duties as assigned.

• Due to COVID 19, this position may be approved to work remotely on a temporary basis, or may be required to physically work on campus. Work assignment locations are at the sole discretion of CSUMB and may be changed or revoked at any time.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Ability to think creatively, take initiative, and work independently within specified time constraints while demonstrating sound judgment and decision-making skills. Strong technical writing and editing skills. Demonstrated ability to produce clear, concise, professional-quality documents for internal/external publication. Must demonstrate effective oral communication skills and the ability to work cooperatively with staff inside and outside of the department. Basic knowledge and understanding of emerging marketing trends and related techniques. Strong organizational skills and demonstrated ability to effectively manage multiple projects and events simultaneously, including setting priorities and completing deliverables by deadlines. Proven ability to use social media to share information and engage with target audience. Advanced computer proficiency, including word processing, spreadsheets, and marketing and publishing software. Technical ability in audio, visual, and cinematography equipment including accompanying software. Ability to gather, build and analyze data from multiple sources to meet necessary reporting needs.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree AND two or more years of experience writing, editing, communication content for individual and group distribution.

• Experience with directly managing, or assisting with the management of websites and related content. Additional experience, which has demonstrated the requisite skills/abilities, may be substituted for required education on a year-for-year basis.

• Experience with WYSIWUG web publishing tools is required (Drupal, Terminal4, WordPress, etc.)

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

• Ability to use Adobe Creative Suite products to edit photos, videos, graphics, and to layout promotional materials and other communications publications. Familiarity with mass-email marketing systems like Constant Contact, Mail Chimp, or Silver POP (SalesForce Marketing Cloud experience preferred). Familiarity with a variety of quick social media posting and publishing tools like Canva, Sprout, HootSuite, and Meta for Business. Demonstrated fluency in Spanish. The hourly hiring range for this position is $24-$27. Classification: Grade 3, Staff. This is a non-exempt position and as such is eligible for the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
