Education Learning Labs Technician

Job Summary:  

Under limited supervision, maintain multiple learning labs , marine life/artifacts/supplies; prepare for and assist with program delivery; perform other duties as required.

Core Activities:       

  • Perform multiple daily rounds to assess exhibit conditions, animal health and life support systems
  • Perform general husbandry functions including but not limited to:
    – general maintenance of live exhibit tanks and displays
    – diet preparation and animal feeding
    – general recordkeeping
  • Prepare set up of animals, artifacts and technology for Learning Lab programs and event
  • Collaborate with Education team to determine and procure program supplies, materials and equipment
  • Conduct rudimentary maintenance of Learning Lab equipment (e.g., wipe down, tighten bolts, secure power cords, de/reassembly/cleaning of vortex pumps /microscopes, etc.
  • Respond to alerts for Bechtel Life Support System (24 hours a day), including working with School Programs Manager to implement the power outage protocols when necessary
  • Maintain the Learning Labs and surrounding areas, providing a safe, clean and welcoming environment (e.g., organize supplies, storage, etc.)
  • Contribute to program development and delivery mechanisms
  • Recommend and update emergency protocols and procedures, including biannual emergency drills (e.g., fire, earthquake, etc.)
  • Respond to emergency situations to ensure safety of staff, volunteers, and visitors (e.g., first aid, etc.)

Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education, training and experience in natural science, education or curriculum design
  • An understanding of biological, mechanical, and chemical filtration
  • Excellent time management skills: able to prioritize multiple tasks to meet deadlines, recognizing time constraints and adjusting work schedule to address
  • Experience in animal husbandry
  • Experience working with a closed aquatic system
  • Working knowledge of all fundamental Education Center life support systems (LSS) and components
  • Demonstrated understanding of basic, aquarium related water quality perimeters and water chemistry (e.g. temperature, Ph, salinity, D.O., nitrogenous compounds, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess basic invertebrate and fish health
  • Demonstrated understanding of basic food preparation, nutrition and feeding techniques
  • Demonstrated ability to perform numerous types of field collections
  • Demonstrated ability to properly transport and acclimate collection specimens
  • Ability to function professionally with a positive attitude in a team environment
  • Ability to be flexible with changes in work priorities and able to add special assignments to work schedule
  • Ability to concentrate and work carefully with animals, delicate specimens, and artifacts
  • Ability to work on weekend days and flexibility to work extended hours
  • Ability to follow recognized Monterey Bay Aquarium safety practices
  • Fluency in Spanish
  • First Aid Certification
  • Ability to work within, and maintain Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Core Values
