Greenfield Community Science Workshop Student Instructor


The fundamental reason this part-time classification exists is to support the development, planning, and implementation of the Greenfield Community Science Workshop (Greenfield CSW) programming. Some Greenfield CSW Student Instructor positions serve in lead capacity over high school employees and volunteers and work independently under the general supervision of the Greenfield CSW Coordinator.


· Assist Greenfield CSW staff with educational program planning and development by:

·Recommending necessary changes in curriculum, instruction, or program organization.

·Suggest ideas for a new program or activities

·Consulting with Greenfield CSW staff to create plans for implementation of new programs and curriculum alignment

·Identify educational resources available to the Greenfield CSW

·Research and suggest appropriate instructional materials for the Greenfield CSW to use.

· Create educational documents that complement Greenfield CSW programs (lesson plans, worksheets, assessments, etc…)

· Integrate cultural themes, language, images, and other materials into educational programs and documents.

· Build and maintain interactive, hands-on educational exhibits that align with curriculum.

· Assist with projects and assignments as directed by the Greenfield CSW Coordinator or Greenfield CSW Instructors

· Facilitate hands-on lessons and activities at Greenfield CSW facilities, schools, parks, events, etc.

·Recruit and maintain students in Greenfield CSW programs.

·Outreach to the families of participating students and will strive to involve them in Greenfield CSW program as much as possible. Outreach may be in the form of emails, texts, phone conversations, and personal visits.

·Assist with creation, distribution, and delivery of marketing materials.

·Provide support with social media efforts.

·Demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality, seamless programming.

·Perform related and other duties as required

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of: 

·Principles and methods used in organizing, conducting, and supervising informal hands-on science activities.

·Theory and philosophy of informal education, and its application to science and children.

·Techniques of planning, organizing, and promoting program activities

·First aid and safety practices and procedures

Ability to:

·Organize, plan, develop and implement informal science education programs

·Train, direct, and evaluate employees and volunteers involved in Greenfield CSW programming.

·Work cooperatively with peers, subordinates, supervisors, and the general public.

·Maintain financial and activity records and produce written documentation in the English language.

· Communicate orally in the English language.

· Sit at a desk and attend meetings on a continuous basis.

· Use near vision for long periods of time.

· Intermittently bend and twist to reach, carry and move educational materials.

·Work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

· Lift objects weighting 50 pounds or less.

· Intermittently reach above and below shoulder level to reach books, files, reports, tools and educational material on shelves, filing cabinets, or sheds.

· Grasp electronic equipment, books, documents, and tools with right and left hand.

· Walk on uneven surfaces; walk and stand for prolonged periods of time.

·Hear adequately to converse on the telephone, cellular phone, and in person.

·Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self and others.

Additional requirements:

·Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver’s license and have a good driving record. Use of personal vehicle will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

· Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment, or shift.

· Individuals must be able to work evenings, weekends, and some holidays, as required.

·Individual must have flexible hours.

· Individual must be at least 18 years old.


· Must be an enrolled college student with knowledge and/or interest in the informal education field.

· Must posses a high level of reading and writing proficiency, organizational skills, and the ability to organize large amounts of paperwork and material.

· Must demonstrate computer proficiency; ability to utilize multiple operating systems as well as various software applications.

Desirable Characteristics

·Interest in pursuing a BA in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).

· Interest in pursuing Teaching as a career

· Bilingual, English/Spanish.

· Knowledge of the Greenfield community and its schools.
