Job Description GENERAL DESCRIPTION / PRIMARY PURPOSE

 

Applies broad knowledge of package engineering to develop and implement production / processing / packaging methods, equipment, and controls to meet production and quality standards in the most cost-efficient manner. Provides significant contribution to teams and projects and is influential within the team or work group. Participates in the training process with staff members.

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS/DUTIES OF THE POSITION

 

Oversees and manages complete packaging development process, including the creation of packaging designs, prototype development, and performance testing.
Manages cross functional project teams to start-up simple and complicated packaging systems at an agreed upon rate and quality, ensuring operational capability. Start-ups will include determining appropriate skills necessary for equipment operability and establishing training requirements.
Provides creative, timely, and cost-effective solutions while troubleshooting new and existing packaging problems involving designs, materials, and processes.
Develop and implement comprehensive test plans to ensure that packaging exceeds customer specifications.
Establishes standards and guidelines for supplier evaluation. Coordinates with the internal Procurement to evaluate and select packaging suppliers/vendors; participate in supplier reviews and KPIs.
Utilizes statistical principles to determine appropriate equipment settings and material choices.
Identifies and implements cost saving initiatives related to packaging materials, labor, efficiency, transportation, and storage.
Responsible for understanding and complying with applicable quality, environmental, and safety regulatory considerations through sustainability engineering principles.
Works closely with Engineering to optimize packaging supply base for cost, lead time, quality, regionalization, standardization, supply assurance, and compliance with customer, regulatory, and internal requirements.
Gathers and analyzes data to determine feasibility of product proposal.
Plans and develops experimental test programs.
Reviews proposals of outside vendors regarding the purchase of new or modernization of existing production / processing equipment.
Partners with management to coordinate activities of project personnel to ensure projects progress on schedule and within budget.
 

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES (Knowledge, Skill, and Experience Requirements)

 

Experience: 5+ years of package systems engineering experience reflecting increasing levels of responsibility preferred.
Knowledge/Skills: Knowledge of Word, AutoCAD, Excel and, MS-Project. Knowledge of project cost management and cost tracking of all costs associated with Dole environmental projects.  Knowledge of federal, state, and local environmental regulatory requirements.  Skilled in Auto Cad or 3D modeling software.
Other: Dynamic, hands-on ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented food-processing environment. Must have the ability to make effective communications, decisions, and directions, interact well with co-workers, understand, and follow posted work rules/procedures and to accept constructive criticism.

INTERNAL & EXTERNAL RELATIONS

 

Internal: Maintenance, Sanitation, Quality, SQF, Production Supervision, FSQA, Innovation, Sales, Procurement, Corporate   Engineering, and other supervisory and Engineering staff members

External: Auditors, vendors, and consultants, suppliers

 

EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATION

 

Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical / Electrical or Chemical Engineering or other related engineering field, from an accredited college/university, or equivalent experience required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

 

Ability to maneuver around an array of equipment, to work in a cold (35* on Plant floor), and moderately noisy environment, bend, stoop, climb stairs, and lift up to 40 pounds. Will have some exposure to fumes and airborne particles.

Domestic travel up to 25% of the time.
